On October 8th, I will be representing Advocate Health Care as a member of the Inspired to Run team at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon! As a member of the Inspired to Run team, I will be training, fundraising, and ultimately running 26.2 miles to benefit patients and families in need.

Since 2011, the Inspired to Run team has raised over $850,000 for Advocate Health Care programs and services. By joining the Inspired to Run team, I am part of a diverse group of people who are supporting cancer research, helping children and adults with Down syndrome, giving back to the nurses and physicians who save lives everyday and much more.
You too can support Advocate Health Care by supporting my efforts to fundraise. Your donation of any amount will not only help me achieve my goal, but will help to ensure that over one million people have access to world-class care close to their home.

MY PERFECT GYM
Ever since I won the Biggestloser on NBC last year, I have tried to stay focused on maintaining the weight off the best I can.   Let me tell you, it has "not" been easy #TheStruggleIsReal, with all the Temptations that life brings its been even harder then I expected. So, I have constantly been looking for workouts that grab my attention and that keep me active. I'm the type of person that gets bored of doing the same things over and over everyday.  So I decided to  do some research, and one machine kept coming up was "The Total Gym".  I know what you're thinking isn't that that machine that Chuck Norris workout with on TV, YES IT IS. Well I'm proud to say, that I got my Total Gym about three weeks ago and "I LOVE IT"!!! I make an effort to us it everyday, No matter what! Since I've been using it my arms, abs and even my back feel stronger, and most important, I've lost about 10lbs. It's very easy to use and with all the different exercises  it allows me to do, it keeps my workouts entertaining and fun everyday.  The more and more I use it, the more I love it.  I give it my full approval and two thumps up...

LOSING TO WIN: MY BIGGEST LOSER STORY

Roberto Hernandez The Biggest Loser Story

My time on “The Biggest Loser” was exciting, and I enjoyed every minute on the show. But people don’t have to go on a show to lose weight. All they need to do is stay focused and find the determination inside themselves. Here are the three questions that helped me stay focused:
  1. Why did I get here?I first had to sit down and figure out what I was doing to gain all this weight. I was not eating right and was not exercising. I was like many Americans across this country who just sat on the couch and did nothing to improve their health. I would always look for the easy way out. Newsflash, America: There is no easy fix. The answer lies in hard work, eating right and exercising.
  2. Where do I want to go?I had to figure out what I wanted out of this experience, and the answer was easy: Lose weight and get healthy, not just for my family, but for myself. I wanted to be able to play with my boys and not have to take a break every 10 to 20 minutes. I wanted to live a long and healthy life.
  3. How do I get there? For me, this was also an easy answer: Hard work and full dedication on “The Biggest Loser” ranch, learn as much as I can while I’m there and apply it when I return to the real world. Now that I’m back in the real world, I’m starting to realize that it’s twice as hard to maintain as it was to lose. Losing was hard, but easier than maintaining because I was away from the everyday temptations. I’ve realized that I have to take it one day at a time.
One thing that I have always told myself is to forget about the numbers on the scale. People tend to focus on those numbers more than anything else. Focus on getting healthy, getting to a point where we feel good about ourselves, not just on how we look externally. I know that feeling of wanting to look good. I always wanted to wear a three-piece suit and was never able to — well, at least wear one and look good in it. The truth is that today I feel great, which matters to me more than how I look.
Of course, I still struggle every day with temptations — I don’t think that will ever end. But I try and focus on what I have done and what can happen if I fall off the wagon. Try and do something that you enjoy. For example, in the few weeks leading up to the finale, I loved turning on the TV, putting on a recorded episode of “The Biggest Loser” and jumping on my Bowflex® TreadClimber® to work out.
Please remember that when it’s all said and done, every one of us is capable of change, and with God on our side, anything is possible. So let’s take the next step together and start this new journey because we’re worth it. God Bless.

In April 2015, Roberto Hernandez realized that he needed to do something about his weight. Roberto saw his son Jacob playing by himself, and wanted to get up to play with him, but just did not have the energy. From that day on he promised himself that he would do everything in his power to lose weight. At the time, he weighed nearly 370 pounds.
By the time “The Biggest Loser” cast him and his twin brother Luis for the 17th season, he had already lost 32 pounds on his own. Roberto understands the everyday struggle people go through in their daily lives. As a contestant on the show, Roberto’s main focus was to become healthy for his family.
Roberto dropped the most weight, a total of 160 pounds, and won the grand prize of $250,000 as he was named “The Biggest Loser” for the season. Roberto is a physical education teacher and educates his students about the importance of a healthy lifestyle every day.

The Biggest Loser Saved My life!

5/25/2016

I know working out every day is hard and eating right sucks, but I’ll tell you what else is hard and sucks: Not being able to tie my shoes without breaking out in a heavy sweat, Not fitting in a seat at the ball park, praying that no one sits next me on a plane, hoping that the seat belt reaches around my big belly, not riding my Harley comfortably, having chest, back, knees, hip, neck, stomach, joint and head pain, not having energy to do normal things (like walking), not being able to walk into a store and buying nice clothes that looks and fits good, having people look at you while you’re eating knowing that they're thinking “go to a gym fat ass instead of a restaurant”, and the number one thing that was the hardest and sucked was not being able to play with my boys because I was either too heavy to move or just did not have the energy to keep up with them. With that being said, I know my season just finished, and I haven’t been out in the real world but 3-4 months, but I know I have to hold myself accountable to keep this weight off, and I know it’s not going to be easy, I have to keep up with my workouts and watch what I eat. The BiggestLoser helped me get to a point where I have tried so hard to get too MY ENTIRE life, and for that I will ALWAYS be grateful. The truth is beside marrying my wife, the birth of my boys, my son Angel, going on the show The Biggest Loser was one of the best experiences in my life. I know many things have been said about the show in the last few weeks and the things that "supposedly" happened behind the scenes. Through my experience on the show, I would have to say its a Lie, at no point during season 17 did anyone come up to me or my brother and ask us to take any pills to lose weight or participate in any foolish activities. We are all adults and should know right from wrong, we signed up for a REALITY SHOW not a life long trainer or nutritionist, for the record they have their own life and can't babysit us for the rest of ours. Jen was great and is a life long friend and a lifeline if i need her but i refuse to bother her about my faults at home, I have to hold myself accountable. To say the Biggest Loser is to blame if i gain weight is WRONG, they helped me to lose weight and I stand by them no matter what.... I believe in the system and feel that our trainers Jen, Dolvett and Bob where great and very helpful through the whole process, Cheryl Forberg, Dr. Huizenga and his athletic trainers were there for us and helped us through injuries and looked out for us in the most positive way, we were lucky and loved having them there for us. I'll end with this... I loved being on the show and I take offense to hear people talking bad about it, I stand next to the show because it helped me get my life back, I felt like I was part of a family with everyone there from the producers to the camera men/women the 12 weeks I was there. They have helped many people and would continue to for a long time.PLEASE SHARE!!

First Softball Game after weight loss

5/17/2016

Sports have always played a big role in my life. As you saw me on episode 7 of The BiggestLoser when we were competing in one of the last chance challenge against Jen's team...I didn't take it to well when we lost. That's why it was so hard for me to comprehend to play softball in the summer when I knew I would struggle to get to first base after a hit. Although I would get on base many times, I had to have other players run the base for me (The Courtesy Runners) due to my weight and inability to move fast through the bases. But that page has been turned. I have lost 160lbs and I'm able to move faster and be the one to run the bases after a hit. Even though we lost big yesterday, I felt like a WINNER! Getting on base and not having that burden of that heavy  weight on me I was finally able to enjoy the game that I love so much again.

Riding out on my new harley

5/7/2016

I rode my Harley to work yesterday, WOW what a great and enjoyable experience. I wanted to learn how to ride for a long time, but I never had the courage to take lessons because I was afraid that my weight would in a way prevent me from passing the class. The truth is, I was afraid of being laughed at and ridicule by people, so I waited, waited,  waited and kept pushing it off, until  I got the courage to take the class last July. Regardless of all the fears I had and the images in my head of looking like a circus bear riding a bike I passed the class and was able to get my license.  Soon after I was casted for the BiggestLoser and was not able to get my Harley. I was finally  able to get my bike a couple of weeks ago.  Another thing that made the ride great was that Luis joined me, we both went  through this journey together made  a big change  not just physically but also mentally. Don't get me wrong, we're both the same old guys that everyone knows, and we don't plan on changing . We are scared, well more like terrified of gaining the weight back, thats why we will continue to eat healthy and exercise. But I'm going to enjoy this body and fight with EVERYTHING in me to keep the weight off.

I was constantly  asked on the ranch what troubled me that lead me to gain all that weight? I would answer every time "NOTHING" I JUST ENJOY EATING. While I didn't have things in my life that drove me to eating, many people do. I suggest to get help, talk to someone that would listen, because YOU ARE WORTH IT. You have to find that inner power to help you get your life back and allow yourself to enjoy something you love,  like me yesterday, riding out on my new Harley Davidson Road Glide. I felt like I belonged on the road,  for some weird reason I felt  that moment was suppose to happen, I felt alive.  That's why yesterdays ride meant so much to me, I was able to enjoy the ride, I was able to ride without that huanting image in my head of that circus bear on a bike and any concerns of people laughing at me, plus i felt  DAMN good and looked good riding my Road Glide. The whole experience from losing this weight, leaving my family, working hard on the ranch and winning The BiggestLoser made that moment possible.

In light of all the news coming out about people's metabolism going down after losing large amount of weight, I figured I should write a quick blog about how I plan on maintaining my weight off!!! First I know every person's body is different and I'm hoping that my won't react like the studies show! But the truth is that most likely it will!!! So I have to sit down and plan out my exercises and healthy eating every week. I want to keep this weight off, and if that means I have to eat healthier and keep exercising at a high level, I will!!! Yea it sucks but the truth is I can tie my shoes, I can ride my Harley and most important I can play with my Boys so it's worth it.... So bring on the healthy eating and high level of exercise!!!
